Oscar glory for The Somersby Store ad director

Somersby Store director wins Oscar

16 years ago our founder, Ryan Newey, gave Suffolk lad Mat Kirkby his first directing job. Since then he’s been one of Fold7’s constant collaborators, directing our standout Somersby Store TV ad, as well as various spots for Gocompare.com; helping us to bring the LlandofsavingmoneyandgettingtherightdealgogoGoCompare to life. Throughout his career he’s also kept busy by directing a whole host of TV commercials and music videos for the likes of Adele and Basement Jaxx.

In between all of that he’s somehow managed to find the time to direct, produce and co-write a short film featuring Sally Hawkins and Jim Broadbent. The 21-minute long film, entitled ‘The Phone Call’, went on to win best live action short at the Oscars last Sunday – congratulations Mat, we’re very proud of you! While we expect he’s still beaming with joy after picking up a coveted gold statuette, we’re glad to see he hasn’t lost sight of his roots – using his acceptance speech to plug a Suffolk-based bakery and their doughnuts.

Check out the trailer for the short film below. And in case you were wondering about these hotly tipped doughnuts, you can hunt them down at Orford’s Pump Street Bakery.
